December 2013 ereaders and tablets

It's December, and time for a new post.

Before I list the books of the month, I'll talk about my favorite subject, ereaders and tablets.

I currently have 3 e-ink readers: (Update, see below)
  1. Kobo Mini - great for on the go
  2. Kobo Glo - great for on the go, especially at night!
  3. Kindle Paperwhite 2 - it was acceptable, until they ruined it with the cloud collections update. At least I've got it JB+custom sleep screen. Now waiting for margin and font hacks to be user friendly. Not sure if the hackers will be able to disable the cloud collection bullshit. So as of now, I have no collections on the PW2.
Favorite e-ink reader: if I could only have one, it would be the Kobo Glo. It is small, light, has an SD card slot to hold thousands of documents, and has the auto-sleep/wake feature.

And I now have three tablets:
  1. Kindle Fire HD (2012) 16gb, rooted with n2a. Got it back from DD when she appropriated the Nook HD+. I mainly use for news and web. My kids are allowed to use it, too.
  2. Nook HD (8gb) got for reading, with the 32gb card it's a 40gb reader! Love it!
  3. Nexus 7.2 (2013) 16gb. Just got this for my birthday (a little early, but it was a deal). Wow! Best Tablet Ever! I absolutely love it. It is slimmer, thinner, and lighter than my Nook HD and has higher resolution. The case I ordered should be here today.
It's hard to compare the Nook HD and the Nexus 7.2 for reading, because I have an anti-glare screen protector on the Nook that I don't want to remove. So I can't really state with certainty if the text is sharper on the higher res Nexus. But the Nexus is absolutely superb for reading. So great, in fact, that I think I am DONE with e-ink readers. I'll keep the ones I have, but don't plan to buy any more...unless one of the good companies (preferably Kobo) makes a lighted 5" e-ink reader.

Favorite tablet: Nexus 7.2. I love how slim, thin and light it is. I love how all the apps I use on my Nook HD automatically downloaded when I clicked a button. (Don't ask me how the Right ones got loaded, and not the hundreds of "hidden object" apps that my DD has on the Nook HD+). It was like magic! Set up in moments.

I did have to buy the Pro version of Moon+ reader, as the ad behavior on the Nexus was far more annoying and intrusive than on the Nook. But that app is well worth $5. I put it on the Nook, too.

Combined with the Calibre Companion app, I have now realized that a high quality tablet simply can't be beat as an ebook reader. For the best, it's the Nexus 7.2. For the budget conscious, it's the Nook HD. The features and performance of these tablets beat the e-ink readers into the ground.

The only advantage to the e-ink reader is longer battery life, smaller size and weight. I can read the Nook HD just fine outside in the sun. (Haven't tried the Nexus yet).

UPDATE-Returned the PW2 for a full refund. No more e-ink Kindles.

November 2013 Books

November thoughts

My current favorite ereader is…..my nook HD 7” tablet!

I feel odd even saying that! But it’s true!

PROS

  • 40 gb storage….I've had computers with less than that! I think I could put a million books on that! (8gb internal + 32gb card)
  • High resolution screen. Crisp black text. Can read even in direct sunlight! (Glare reducing screen protector is applied)
  • Multiple reading apps to choose from. As of today my favorite is Moon+. It’s super customizable, you can have it show time left in chapter and book at a glance, AND it uses my favorite sideloaded font!
  • With the Calibre Companion app, I have total control over library management, in conjunction with Calibre on my desktop! The combination is more than I ever dreamed of!

CONS

  • It is much heavier than my e-ink readers
  • Battery doesn't last as long as my e-ink readers

It is absolutely a PERFECT reading device! Every time my thoughts stray to the Kobo Aura, I have to remind myself that I don't need it, and the Nook HD was $50 cheaper! If I have to charge it more, so what! Between the Nook, the Kobo Glo, and the Kobo Mini, I am covered!

I gave away the Pyrus Trekstor Mini....talk about bad battery life *shudder* It was fun to play with, though. I loved the size of the screen. But that's about all I loved!

Books read in November 2013

  1. Aramus by Eve Langlais (Cyborgs More than Machines #4). SF erotica. Fantastic and funny! I loved it! 5 stars.
  2. His Lordship Possessed by Lynn Viehl (Disenchanted part 2). Steampunk paranormal. The second half of the book. I liked it pretty much. Still ticked that it was sold in two parts. 4 stars.
  3. Captive Heart by Mina Carter. Futuristic. It was pretty good, though a little more editing would have improved it. 3.5 stars.
  4. Confession (Cattle Valley #25) by Lynn Viehl. MM. Really good episode in the soap. 4 stars.
  5. Shadow Soldier (Cattle Valley #26) by Lynn Viehl. MM. Loved it. 4 stars.

October 2013 Books

October 2013

Ereader update -

The guy that bought my Nook ST had no trouble with it. *phew!*

I received a Trekstor Pyrus Mini from a friend, I love the 4.3" screen, but the software sucks ass. And the text is not as dark as my Kobo Mini. So it won't be here for long.

If I embed my favorite font into the azw3 format, it displays beautifully on the Kindle Paperwhite II. The text is dark and sharp. My Glo is still the winner, due to size, weight, SD card slot and Calibre collection management.

September 2013 Books & ereaders

September 2013 Books and ereaders

Ok I'll get to the books. First a few ruminations about ereaders.

I had pre-ordered the Kobo Aura, but I cancelled it. I will wait til it is available from a US supplier, and also for reports from users as to its durability. So far, I am hearing a lot of not so good things.

In the meantime, I did pre-order the New Paperwhite 2. If I like it, I will sell the Paperwhite 1. If not, I will sell the PW2.

I also finally found another Kobo Mini. I have always regretted selling mine! It is white, and comes with a green cover, for $40. I should have it in hand by the end of the week. I am SO excited. I loved the small size! I will most likely sell the Nook ST, which is what I replaced my first Mini with. Yes the rooted Nook ST is really nice, but it’s so wide! Add a cover, and it’s a monster! Rumor has it a new Nook will be out next month, but that remains to be seen. So maybe I’ll wait til next month, my used one will be a lot cheaper than a new one, so people might be more apt to buy it. I hate to part with it, but I’m not likely to use it. So it might as well go away.

9/19/13

Received the Kobo Mini today. I am so happy now. It is white, and I like that. It came with the same green Navitech case I had before. I have applied a skin and some fancy duct tape to the outside to hide the ugly burlap type covering. I think it’s pretty nice, now. I love my little Mini!

9/23/13

Horrifying experience yesterday. I sold the Nook ST via a forum board. So I wanted to de-register it. The only way to do that on a Nook device is to also erase the device. So I do that. But I wanted to re-register it to a different account. Error. No amount or re-setting, factory restore, side loaded restore, nothing will get past that error screen. I followed all the steps for a rooted device. Nothing worked. The only saving thing is the guy I am sending it to has no plans to register it or use it in any stock way, plans to do lots of hacking etc, and isn’t worried about it’s currently unfriendly state. I just hope he is happy when he gets it. That really scared the pants off me, and I don’t know if I’ll ever buy another Nook device. I added a little hack to our three tablets, what will happen if I ever want to put them on another account? Scary.

I have rooted Kindles and Sony’s and never had this type of thing happen. I even had a hack on my Kobo for a short time, and screwed that up (my fault), fixed it and installed it correctly, and uninstalled it. My Kobo is FINE. In fact, so far, the KOBO is the one I do not have to root to get what I want out of it. I have no plans to root my newest Kindle. Which is why I don't know if I'll keep it.

August 2013 books & Ereaders

Ok first things first....I sold the Onyx Firefly, and the Nook Glow order was cancelled by the seller. Then Kobo released a Kobo Aura, and Kindle refreshed their Paperwhite. (No lighted 5" darn it!) I have decided that I do want the Aura. While still a 6" screen, it is smaller, and has twice the memory, and a new capacitative screen design. I want the one with the pink back, which is not yet ready to order for the US. So, I wait. In the meantime, I added Koreader to my Paperwhite, which turned out to be a very good thing. Now I have folder support, and the formatting of my epubs is displayed correctly! Really nice. I put it on my Kobo, but my epubs looked like crap, so I took it right back off.

Books I Read in August 2013:

Elijah (Nightwalkers 3) by Jacquelyn Frank. PNR. Loved it! Really good story. 4 stars.

Hexed (Iron Druid 2) by Kevin Hearne. UF. Wow. Fabulous!!! 5 stars.

Shadow Game (GhostWalkers 1) by Christine Feehan. PNR. Finally got around to this series, glad I did! It was good. 4 stars.

Envy (Fallen Angels 3) by J.R. Ward. PNR One of the best in the series so far. 5 stars.

Mind Game (GhostWalkers 2) by Christine Feehan. PNR. Had to get right back to this series. Excellent! 5 stars.

Her Ladyship's Curse (Disenchanted & Co Part 1) by Lynn Viehl. historical pnr. HUGE let down. This was only half a book! With no ending! I cancelled my pre-order of part 2. 3 stars for being a good half.

How Green This Land, How Blue This Sea by Mira Grant. Zombie book. It was ok, nothing near as good as the Newsflesh trilogy. 3 stars.

The Greyfriar (Vampire Empire 1) by Clay & Susan Griffith. Historical PNR. Wow was this ever amazingly good! I've got to read the next one ASAP. 5 stars.

Jealous and Freakn' (Freakn 2) by Eve Langlais. Erotic PNR. It was ok. Not sure why I even rated it 3 stars.

The Duchess War (Brothers Sinister 1) by Courtney Milan. HR. Awesome. My new favorite HR author. 5 stars.

DUST (Silo 3) by Hugh Howey. Post-apocalyptic. I can give only the HIGHEST Praise for this book, and this entire series. 5 stars.

Molly Fyde and the Parsona Rescue by Hugh Howey. First in a YA Sci-fi series. Excellent!!! 5 stars.

Why Dukes Say I Do by Manda Collins. HR. DNF. Bad. Repetitious. Unlikeable characters that I didn't care about.

The Ninth Orb by Kaitlyn O'Connor Scifi erotica. Excellent! 5 stars.

Exiled by Kaitlyn O'Connor. Scifi erotica. Very good. 4 stars.

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. Kids book. It was really good! Will be reading the rest. 5 stars.

Darkness Rising by Elissa Wilds. Didn't like it enough to read more than a few chapters. DNF.

Fly away, Firefly....comparison between Nook Simple Touch and Onyx Firefly

As much as I love some things about the Boox Onyx Firefly, its failures may cause me to sell it.

Yes it is so great for organizing documents in folders and subfolders! Yes it has 4gb memory and SD card slot! Yes it has a light! Yes it has page turn buttons and a back button! Those are all GREAT things.

The Nook Simple Touch matches most of those things, only 2gb memory but SD card makes that ok. No light. Everything else, yes.

But...the light on the Firefly makes the text look washed out. (Not to mention it can be seen from the space station).

The Firefly processor is slow, in my unofficial comparison, much slower than the Nook ST. Try opening a book on both and it becomes very clear.

I have tested several books on each device...the same books...each of which had been opened previously, so no start up caching was necessary. The Nook takes 1 second to go to the last page. The Firefly takes 7-10 seconds to go to the last page. Maybe that doesn't sound like a lot, but it is.

The Firefly is much heavier than the Nook.

But the biggest drawback of all, and the deal breaker, is the text display. The Firefly has 3 applications to display text.

  1. PDF reader, which can display epub fine, but which will not use side loaded fonts. Deal breaker.
  2. FB Reader, which will not display any italics. Deal breaker
  3. Cool Reader, which will display italics on some documents correctly, but completely ignore them on others. That is not the deal breaker.  But the fact that it deletes ALL spaces between paragraphs, including page breaks between chapters, is a huge deal breaker. Instead of my nicely formatted epub documents, it displays one long continuous unbroken field of text. Big time deal breaker. Even though I can use my font, it is just not comfortable or enjoyable to read like that.
The Nook, I did have to root and add Mantano to get my own font. Now that I have done that, the display is excellent. All my formatting is retained, the italics are correct, the font is sharp, dark, and I can use my preferred font, altogether making it overall much nicer to read on than the Firefly.

So despite the light, and the larger memory, the Nook ST wins the contest. The Firefly is going to have to fly away. I just can't read on it like that.

The good thing is, I just got a good deal on a Nook Glowlight. So when that gets here, I will compare it with my others.

UPDATE 8-31

Yes I sold the Firefly. It did not meet my needs. Still waiting on the Nook Glow, the site I am getting from is a slow shipper. I do plan to put Nook Manager on it as soon as I get it, and Mantano + my favorite font. Unless I hate the light, then I will resell it. But any light is better than no light. So I will probably like it and sell the unlighted Nook.

My ereaders - musings

So now I have more than a handful to choose from...

1. I can choose the Nook Touch, which is light weight, easy to hold, pleasant to look at and read on, and holds thousands of books on the SD card in folders and sub-folders by author’s name! But, it has no light. I have rooted it and added Mantano and my favorite font. If it had a light, it would be perfection! It’s a nice one to throw in my bag and not worry if it should get messed up.

2. I can choose the Amazon Paperwhite, which is lighted, rooted and hacked, but severely limited by 2gb space (in actuality, that’s 1gb) and uses collections, not folders. I hardly even pick it up anymore, but my son uses it most every day.

3. I can chose my Kobo Glo, which has a wonderful light, and an SD card, but seems to slow when it has a lot of books on it, and uses collections, not folders. Easiest to manage using Calibre, however. No need to root. The lightest on my list.

4. I can choose my Onyx Firefly, which has a light, an SD card slot, and I can keep files in folders and subfolders!!!! Utterly perfect. Even has page turn buttons! I have thousands on the internal memory with no noticeable slowing. Only drawback, it’s a little heavy to carry out of the house. And utterly irreplaceable should it get damaged--it is expensive and only available in Europe. (I got a GREAT deal on a used one)

5. I can choose my Nook HD 7” tablet, which I got to read on (before the Firefly)...of course I can put every book I own on it and not run out of room, all in folders and subfolders. It is even fine to read on outside! It is, however, heavier than everything else on my list. But I LOVE it for reading.

I am happy with these 5, and don’t think I am going to sell any of them. The trouble comes when new readers are released, and I am tempted. However, I have made my list of upgrade requirements, and I am sticking to those.

Desired requirements for any upgrade as of 7/10

on board memory 8gb (minimum 4 gb) or SD card slot
high resolution
front light
1ghz or higher processor
weight 185g or less
text - customizable margins, line spacing, font size
fonts - must be able to add custom fonts
must be able to manage collections using Calibre!!!! OR use folders & subfolders!
5” screen

Those requirements will probably rule out any new Kindles. Here's hoping for a lighted Kobo Mini. I'd probably get one even without an SD card slot. I just sold my Kobo Mini, and I do miss it. But the light is a killer feature. I may eventually sell my Nook Touch, simply because it is unlighted.

The other thing I am obsessed with is weight. Here is a summary of all the current gadgets in my house:

Kobo Glo       185g    6.53oz
Nook Touch   212g    7.48oz
Paperwhite    221g    7.80oz
Onyx Firefly   250g    8.19oz

Nook HD         315g  11.11oz
KFHD             395g  13.9oz
Nook HD+      515g   18.2oz

May 2013 Books & ereaders

So here it is May, and I have been reading almost exclusively on the new-to-me Kobo Mini. I like it so much, in fact, that when a good sale came to my attention, I immediately ordered a Kobo Glo. Not sure what this will mean to my Kindles, but the Sony will be sold.

The Kobo can, using Calibre, create and update shelves very easily, just like the Sony can. Much easier and faster than doing so with a Kindle, which requires rooting to achieve the same sort of thing. You can also add fonts very easily to the Kobo, and it has incredible customization features to get your text how you want it. I love the light weight and the sleep cover feature. My Glo will be here in a few days and I can't wait to get started loading my books on it! The Glo is the size of the Kindle Paperwhite, and has a better light, and an SD card so you are not limited to a lousy 1.4 GB (of which you better not use more than 1/2 or you will experience major slowness). So I am thinking I might like the Kobo Glo better. But time will tell.

So books I've read in May:

1. Allison Hewitt is Trapped by Madeleine Roux. Zombies. Wow, was this book ever good! Written in blogger style, it was just SO good, action packed, heartbreaking, hope inspiring, I just loved Allison so much. Glad the book had a hopeful ending. I will be reading the next in the series (which is about all different characters, yay). 5 stars.

2. Wild Fire (Leopard People 4) by Christine Feehan. PNR. I liked it, but some parts were overly long, and some parts were repetitious. 3 stars.

3. Hot Ice (T-FLAC 7) by Cherry Adair. Romance Suspense. Was glad to be done with it. Rates barely 3 stars.

4. Promises Keep (Promises 2) by Sarah McCarty. Historical erotica. It was good, but about 2/3 the women's rights stuff got on my nerves. Some other parts did, too. 3 stars.

5. Love and War: The Beginning by Samantha Kane. Very short historical erotica. 26 pages. Very good, I adore Jason, so it was nice to read about him again. 4 stars.

6. Untamed Hunger (Alpha Colony 1) by Audrey Ross. Scifi erotica. 88 pages. Good, but wanted there to be more to it. 3 stars.

7. Minder (Terran Times)by Viola Grace. Scifi romance. 71 pages.  Good story. 3 stars.

8. Soul Possession by Maya Banks. Short story from an anthology. Was very good menage romance. 4 stars.

9. Web of Lies (Elemental Assasisin 2) by Jennifer Estep. Urban fantasy. I love this series! This one was great, fast paced and I loved the ending. 4 stars.

10. The Rake to Ruin Her (Ransleigh Rogues 1) by Julia Justiss. Historical romance.  I thought there were some boring parts in the middle, but overall, I enjoyed it. 4 stars.

11. Warlord's Prize (Darkest Star 1) by Zenina Masters (aka Viola Grace). Scifi romance. It was all right. Kind of bizarre. 3 stars.

12. Full Moon Rising (Lunewulf 6) by Lorie O'Clare. erotic paranormal. The two characters were well done, and I enjoyed the story. 4 stars.

13 . Venereus by Sherri King. Short erotica. This was good, well written dark erotica. She was like a succubus/vampire thing. I don't like the title, though. 4 stars.

14. Master of the Shadows (Darkyn 7.1) by Lynn Viehl. PNR. Great companion piece to the last Darkyn book (read that first!) 5 stars.

15. Moon Lust by Sherri King. Erotic PNR. Not much to it. It was ok. 3 stars.

16. Rapture (Bonds of Justice 2) by Elayne Venton. Scifi erotica. Quite a good story. 4 stars.

17. Freak Factor (Sector Guard 1) by Viola Grace. SFR. Good story. 4 stars.

18. Dragen's Fire (Bonds of Justice 3) by Elayne Venton. SFerotica. Good. 3 stars.

19. Incarnation (Darkyn 7.6) by Lynn Viehl. PNR.  Absolutely loved it. 5 stars.

20. Worthy, Willing and Wanted by Lynn Viehl. PNR. A set of 3 free stories in the Darkyn world. They were very good! 4 stars.

21. An Ambush of Tigers by Mandy Monroe (aka Kaitlyn O'Connor).
I gave it my best shot. It was really just not something I could force myself to finish. It's funny b/c I was in the car with my DH and said a few things out loud as I decided to stop, and my DH wanted to know what and why, so I told him a few things, like how this guy who'd only been human for 10 days, and had no idea how to even use a shower or brush his teeth, not only found the time (the sanctuary needed major work due to a big flood), but also the knowledge to sand and paint the kitchen table. That is just one of the major inconsistencies in this book. And where in TEXAS did these tiger shifter people, who raised their babies as tigers and did not share the secret of how to shift until they reached maturity, LIVE? In TEXAS? Who knew there was plenty of jungle to hide your tiger children, in TEXAS? DNF.

22. The Thief of Mardu (Life in the Vrail 2) by Marie Harte. SFR. Great story. Loved the characters, and of course, the setting! 4 stars.

23. Declan and Tori (The Hunters 1) by Shiloh Walker. PNR erotica. This was a great story! I loved the characters and how they developed. Good start to the series. 4  stars.

24. Going Against Orders (Men in Love 5) by Carol Lynne. MM. Good story, I just wish the Colonel had dropped dead. 4 stars.

25. Hounded (Iron Druid 1) by Kevin Hearne. UF. What a fantastic book! I loved Atticus. And Oberon! I want Oberon! 5 stars.

26. Bride of Atlantis by Marie Morin (aka Kaitlyn O'Connor). Fantasy romance. This turned out to be a good story. I was pleased with the end. 4 stars.

27. Nightborn (Lords of the Darkyn 1) by Lynn Viehl. PNR. Really great book. Korvel was a bit of an idiot, but other than that, I loved it. 4.5 stars.

28. Big Bad Beast (Pride 6) by Shelly Laurenston. PNR. This book was awesome. Super funny. I loved Dee-Ann and Ric. I liked how it all wrapped up, too. 5 stars.

29. Laid Bare (Brown 1) by Lauren Dane. CR. This book started out really good, and I enjoyed the first 40% or so. After that, it fell completely flat, so different from the beginning, it was as if it was written by a different person. 2 stars.

30. Valiant (New Species 3) by Laurann Dohner. Erotic PNR. This book was really good. There were a couple of minor inconsistencies, but overall it was well done, fast paced, and the ending was great. 4 stars.

31. Sanctuary's Price (Red Rock Pass 3) by Moira Rogers. PNR. Great story, well-drawn characters, good plot, nice resolution. 4 stars.

And the Sony was sold, and the Kobo Glo arrived and is excellent.

April 2013 Books

I've started the month off with a cluster of MM stories in the Lost Shifters series by Stephani Hecht. While these paranormal romances are rife with editorial errors, I enjoy them.

1. A Tempting Distraction (#7)
2. A Shifter Christmas (#8)
3. An Assasin's Touch (#9)
4. Shane's Fury (#10)

They all get about 4 stars. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Other books for April:

5. A Tarnished Knight by Bec McMaster (London Steampunk 1.5). The first book in the series was one of the best books ever. So I was delighted to find this short story for free on the author's web site. I copied it all and make a book to read on my Kindle. Loved it! 5 stars. Looking forward to the release of book 2 next month.

6. Nauti Kisses by Lora Leigh (Nauti #6) (from the book Nauti and Wild). Loved this short romantic erotic suspense story. I love all the MacKays and friends so this was a great read.

7. Dark Guardian by Christine Feehan (Carpathians #9). Another great story in this series. I loved both characters and the wolves! And Jaxx was really awesome. 4 stars.

8. The Thrall by Angela Knight. Erotic SF short. It was kind of funny, to me. Was a decent read. 4 stars.

9. Silver and Silence by Viola Grace. SFR short. 33 pages. Good story. 3 stars.

10. Siren Enslaved (Texas Sirens 3) by Sophie Oak. Erotica. BDSM. GREAT story. Some suspense, some menage, lots of great story. 5 stars.

11. The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld 1) by Gena Showalter. PNR. It was pretty good. I liked all the "brothers." Some of the world building type things seemed strange, guess I'll have to read more in the series to see where that is going. 4 stars.

12. Lucy's Lover (Federation Chronicles 1) by Arianna Hart. SFerotica. It was ok. Lots of sex, not much else really going on. It became tiresome. Not sure if I will continue with the series. 3 stars.

13. Gabriel's Woman by Robin Schone. Historical erotica. I loved this book. Tortured hero and persecuted heroine. 5 stars.

14. Yuletide Greetings (Taboo Wishes 3) by Brynn Paulin. erotica. Very short but I liked it. One little thing squicked me out at the end, and that was the age of "Bill." That was freakly. 3 stars.

15. Miss Emmaline and the Archangel by Rachel Lee (Conard County 3). Predictable. The stalker was creepy, but the whole ritual thing was never really explained. At least the cattle killings that went unsolved in the previous books were solved in this one. However I did a lot of skimming. I am probably done with this series. 2 stars.

16. Midnight Blues by Lynn Viehl. PNR short. Good story, though the end was too abrupt and I was left wondering what happened to the characters next? 3.5 stars.

17. Embrace the Darkness (Guardians of Eternity 2) by Alexandra Ivy. PNR. Great book! I loved the whole thing. Shay was great, Viper, amazing! 5 stars.

18. The Duke's Perfect Wife (Highland Pleasures 4) by Jennifer Ashley. Historical romance. The story was ok. Way too much flash back and reliance on past events to fill the pages. I skimmed quite a lot. The ending sequence was also way too long, and a bit unbelievable that he did not leave the message sooner. 2.5 stars.

19. Paradise 21 by Aubrie Dionne. SFR. FANTASTIC. I love this series. 5 stars.

20. Slade (Tales of the Were 4 or 5) by Bianca D'arc. PNR. Another bomb. It was terrible. 1 star (for the cover).

21. Lynx (Northern Shifters 3) by Joely Skye. MM PNR. The story started well, and ended well. The middle sagged. A 4 year separation is way too long in a romance. 3 stars.

22. Ride the Fire by Pamela Clare. Historical Romance. From goodreads:
Sorry to say, but this story was too long. And while the female lead started out well, she turned into a TSTL that I wanted to slap the shit out of. I mean, when a man has been unconscious for a day or two due to a blow on the head, what is the first thing you should do when he wakes up? Yell at him? When your man tells you to go to your rooms with your INFANT to stay safe and instead you ignore him and go where you could be KILLED, is that the act of a smart person with an INFANT? She acted like an idiot time and time again. By the end I was SO annoyed and sick of that woman. I couldn't wait for it to be over. 2 stars.

23. Star Crossed (Entwined Fates 2) by Trista Ann Michaels. SFerotica. Stupid characters, lots of sex, and a cardboard villain make for 2 stars.

24. Blood Memories (Vampire Memories 1) by Barb Hendee. UF. I really enjoyed this. One of very few books in which flash backs do not make me die of boredom. I wonder what will happen next in the series. However, don't know if I will read more in the series. (It's not romance). 4 stars.

25. Sweet Temptation (Sweet 4) by Maya Banks. Contemporary erotic romance. Great addition to the series. Good suspense plot, good sex (with men on viagra OR possessing super penis powers), and I loved the ending, too. 5 stars.

26. The Courage to Love (Brothers in Arms 1) by Samantha Kane. Historical erotic romance. Loved this book! Jason was so mmmmm mmmmm good! OMG! I want a man to talk to me like that! I suspect this story would not appeal to historical purists, but hey, it's Ellora's Cave. I thought it was awesome! Just one question unanswered at the end takes away 1/2 a star, so this gets 4.5 stars from me!

27. Hidden Depths (Hidden 2) by Emma Holly. PNR. Great story! Fabulous M/M/M/F sex. I didn't think I'd like it (wereseals!) but I really did. Complex and interesting. Great ending, too! 5 stars.

28. Date Night (Hidden 2.5) by Emma Holly. PNR short. A fun epilogue. 3.5 stars.

29. B785 (Cyborgs 3) by Eve Langlais. SFerotica. Great story! This is a fantastic series. Can't wait for the next one. 5 stars.

30. Kithra (Kithran 1) by Dani Worth. SFR. Great science fiction romance! I will be reading the rest of the series for sure. 4 stars.

31. On Thin Ice (T-FLAC 6) by Cherry Adair. Romance Suspense. Great book. Put on your winter coat before you read it. Loved every bit. 5 stars.

32. Lords of the Sea by Kaitlyn O'Connor. SFR. Wow what an interesting story. Cue Led Zeppelin..."Communication Breakdown" and you sum up the relationship between these characters. all the way to the end, they did not communicate. I found the story very interesting, though I'd have liked a few questions answered at the end. As is so often the case, a little too abrupt. 4 stars.

33. Day by Day Armageddon by J.L. Bourne. Zombies. GREAT story. I loved the journal style. The book was very interesting and entertaining. 4 stars.

March 2013 books

I am really sick of stories by "indie" authors that are just NOT ready for publication. I just gave up after 20% on Vengeance Moon by Savannah Jordan. This was a full sized book that has the potential to be good, but needs a professional editor and plenty of polish. I was not going to waste over 400 pages of reading time on a mediocre performance. I don't want to waste time on any more indie authors, unless I am already familiar with (and enjoy) their work. I didn't even check out a March Kindle owner's lending library book, this month. I suppose I can look at the list again...

So books that I have read so far in March:

Soulbound by Tessa Adams. Paranormal, UF? It was a weird book. The only reason I  read it is because it was for a challenge. It is written in PRESENT tense which I DETEST. At least it was a fast read with lots of action. 4 stars.

Found *Brides of the Kindred #4* by Evangeline Anderson. Erotic scifi romance. Great book! All the settings were fabulous. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars, is near the end, when the four Kindred were helping Xairn, we didn't get to see any of their action, and Deep didn't really play the pivotal role he was set up for. Also I thought Xairn should have produced more emotion in me. But it was great. 4 stars.

Die For Me by Cynthia Eden. Romance suspense. Shiveringly good! Kept me guessing til the very end! Awesome book. 5 stars.

Slade by Laurann Dohner, New Species #2. Erotic sci-fi romance. Good story. Good action scenes. Good sex scenes. I didn't care for Slade very much, he as an idiot. I guess he improved toward the end. I really liked the secondary characters. 4 stars.

The Awakening by Kaitlyn O'Connor. A Cyborg prequel book. At last, we get to experience the time on the frozen planet when all the cyborgs woke up! It was great! Now I want the next story, which hasn't been written yet, to take place before Total Recall. 5 stars.

Ruthless Pursuit by Stephani Hecht. MM Paranormal romance. Good episode in the fantastic Lost Shifters series. Could have used more editing. 4 stars.

Keeper of the Flame by Bianca D'arc, Dragon Knights #7 or 8. While better than the previous story, still not that good. Way too sweet and sugary. 3 stars.

Titanic with Zombies by Richard Brown. This was actually pretty good! Title is self explanatory. 4 stars.

Heart Thief by Robin Owens. Celta #2. WOW. This story was SO good. If I hadn't read the prequel, maybe I wouldn't have liked it as much. But this was great, because the SHIP was in it! Love the ship! 5 stars.

Standing in the Shadows by Shannon McKenna. Romance suspense. Fantastic. I loved the way it all played out. 5 stars.

Kissing Steel by Laurann Dohner, Cyborg Seduction #2. Erotic scifi romance. I loved this story. The odds against them were unsurmountable! But they were able to get their happy ending! 5 stars.

Azar's Prize by Reese Gabriel. More Than Male #3. Erotic scifi romance. This story felt like a filler. Ten tons of sex and some filler in story line. 3 stars.

In Bed With a Highlander by Maya Banks. Historical romance. Loved it! 5 stars.

My Sunshine by Catherine Anderson. Contemporary romance. Somewhat predictable, but good. 4 stars.

Fair Game by Patricia Briggs, Urban fantasy. Excellent! 5 stars.

Intentional Abduction by Eve Langlais. Erotic SFR. Funny story! 4 stars.

Dominance Fury by Angelia Whiting. Erotic SFR.

Lover Revealed by JR Ward. PNR. Fantastic! 5 stars.

Serving Nicole by Marilyn Campbell. Erotica...light and fluffy. 3 stars.

The Untamed Heiress by Julia Justiss. Historical romance. I absolutely loved this! 5 stars.

Alpha Panthers by Becca Van. Siren PNR menage.

Taming Olivia by Becca Van. Siren PNR menage.

End of the Line by Bianca D'arc. SFR short.

February 2013 Books

Books Read in February 2013:

Armageddon by Kaitlyn O'Connor. SFR. KOC is one of my favorite authors, but this book wasn't that great. It was interesting, and I didn't want to not finish it. But it lacked the humor of some of her books, in fact it was downright dreary and depressing. It did have a happy ending, so that was good. According to one site it is the first book in the Clone Wars series, however, I am unable to determine if there were any more books written in the series. 2.5 stars.

Kidnap and Kink by Brynn Paulin. BDSM. Taboo Wishes #2. Really good story. The cover is horrible and I put a different one on my ereader. The story was very good. 4 stars.

Avari Nyx & Marks of Admar by Viola Grace. #3&4 of Champions of Terra. Erotic sci-fi romance. They were quite good, though the usual bad sentence structure and incorrect use of commas was a bit annoying. 3 stars each.

Sanctuary Lost by Moira Rogers. PNR. #2 of Red Rock Pass. Good story, lots of action, relationship building, and moves the story arc along quite well. 4 stars.

Caging the Beast by Marie Harte. Sci-fi erotic MM romance. #4 of Creations. Excellent story about the Beast (a Creation) and his alien lover and mate. Lots of action, good sex scenes, and a nice conclusion to the series. I would love to see a new series about the Ebrellions. 4 stars.

Haldis Imperium by Viola Grace (Champions of Terra #5) Good light reading, funny here and there. 3 stars

A Perfect Darkness by Jaime Rush (Offspring #1) Great story, and it has a Cockatoo! Very well portrayed, too. The story was really good, I loved it. All the people are still in very great danger, though, so it was a "happy for now" kind of ending. 4 stars.

A Drop of Blood by Viola Grace (25 pg) I really liked this one. It packed a lot of story into a few pages. 4 stars.

Heart of the Oracle by Viola Grace (25 pg) Really good! A bit piece in the universe she has written hundreds of stories in. 4 stars.

Embracing My Submission by Jenna Jacob (BDSM). When I first started this book, I didn't think I was going to like it, because it is in first person, and I didn't think I liked Emerald that much. But that sure changed! There was so much emotional growth throughout the story. The BDSM was excellent. I loved the relationships between all the major players. There was a considerable amount of "purple prose" during sex scenes. That, and sloppy editing of the last few chapters, forces me to knock off half a star. But overall, an excellent read! I would definitely read more by this author. This book puts authors who play at writing BDSM to shame. 4.5 stars.

Lurin's Surrender by Marie Harte (Life in the Vrail #1) SF erotic romance. Great story! 4 stars.

The Many Sins of Lord Cameron by Jennifer Ashley. Historical romance. Loved it! Cam and Ainsley were great characters. 5 stars

Scorcher by Viola Grace (Terran Times #2). Really enjoyable story. 4 stars/

The Heat of the Knight by Scottie Barrett. Historical Erotic Romance. Pretty bad, they spoke like modern people, but the setting was the middle ages. And that is only one reason why this one gets 2 stars.

Omega by Susannah Sandlin (Penton #3). Be still my heart, I loved this series and this book! I do hope there will be more! 5 stars.

Raphael/Parish by Laura Wright & Alexandra Ivy. 2 stories, paranormal romance, which ended with a cliff hanger! Excellent writing. 5 stars.

Atlantean Heat by Jordan Summers. (Atlantean's Quest 3.5) Despite that I skipped #3 unintentionally, I wasn't lost, so this story works as a stand alone. Short scifi erotica. 3 stars.

Erica's Choice by Sami Lee. Contemporary Menage. Excellent story, dealt very well with sensitive topics. Three very realistic characters. Great sex, too! 4 stars.

Heart Mate by Robin D. Owens (Celta #1). Futuristic scifi romance. I loved it, though I found the chapters long for my taste. I loved the ending where they were finally happy. 4 stars.

I figured out why I read multiple books at a time. When one gets too intense or scary or something, I put it down and read some of another, until I can go back to it.

January 2013

New reads for the new year! My goal this year is to read more! I've also crossed young adult and most urban fantasy off my list for the year. Romance, romance, romance! Move some series along, start a few new series.

What I've read this month:

A Wicked Caress by Stephani Hecht. Paranormal MM romance. Book five in the Lost Shifters series. These books are pretty short, and fairly expensive for their length, but they are SO good. I plan to read the entire series. 4 stars.

Siren in the City by Sophie Oak. Menage erotica. Book 2 in the series. One of the few Siren authors worth reading. Good story. 4 stars.

Spider's Bite by Jennifer Estep. Urban fantasy, book in the series. It was pretty good. But I don't know if I'll read more. I am moving away from UF (i.e. - series about one character) so this series is tabled for now. 4 stars.

Rebellion & Resurrection by Eve Vaughn. SF erotic romance. Books 3 & 4 of the series. 3 stars to each. They were ok. Book 3 was better. Book 4 was a little anti-climactic. I'm glad the series is done.

Refugees on Urloon by Melisse Aires. SFR. Sometimes you take a chance on an author when there's a sale. This one was definitely not worth the change I paid for it. 2 stars.

The Gladiators by Kaitlyn O'Connor. Erotic SFR. book 3 in the Enslaved series. As with most KO'C books, I really liked it. 4 stars.

Absolution by Susannah Sandlin. PNR. Book 2 in the series. AWESOME! I love this series. Can't wait for book 3, next month! Highly recommend. 5 stars.

Tee-ani's Pirates by Rachel Clark. Erotic SFR. A Siren book, and it was a good one. Will be reading more by this author. 4 stars.

Delicate Freakn' Flower by Eve Langlais. PNR. Book 1. Excellent, funny book. This is a really good author. Recommended. 5 stars.

Captive by Trista Ann Michaels. Erotic SFR. Book 1 in the Entwined Fates series. I really enjoyed it and look forward to reading the entire series. 4 stars.

Dark Citadel by Cherise Sinclair. BDSM erotic romance. Book 2 in Masters of the Shadowlands. Excellent. This lady knows how to write BDSM. Loved it! 5 stars.

Hunted by Evangeline Anderson. Erotic SFR. Book 2 in Brides of the Kindred. LOVED it. Look forward to reading more. 5 stars.

Colonization by Aubrie Dionne. SFR. Wow! Sometimes you take a chance on a sale and it's worth every penny! This was one of the best books ever! Looking forward to reading more by this author. 5 stars.

Prince of Ice by Emma Holly.  A Tale of the Demon World book. I love the world created here, which is a sort of historical steampunk blend. This book was worth every penny. 5 stars.

Sought by Evangeline Anderson. Erotic SFR. Book 3 in Brides of the Kindred. Couldn't wait, had to read it, loved it! I'll probably read #4 very soon. I've got to find out what happens with the next couple. 5 stars.

Angelic Desires by Stephani Hecht. PNR. Very short prequel to the Archangel series. It was good but cut off too abruptly. I guess that was the idea, now I really need to read the series! 3 stars.

Mercury's War by Lora Leigh. Breeds #16. PNR erotica. Love, love, love the Breeds, and this was no exception. 5 stars.

Holly by Dominique Adair. BDSM erotic romance. Starts off pretty good, kind of peters out. 3 stars.

Hybrid Misfit by Eve Langlais. PNR erotica. Wow I hope this is the start of a series. This was fabulous! 5 stars.

Hidden Enemies by Ravyn Wilde. Erotic romantic suspense with a touch of paranormal. Excellent! 4 stars.

Winded by Sherri King. Part of the Shikar series. Short but really good. I love the Shikar books! I've read them all. 4 stars.

Forbidden Pleasure by Lora Leigh. Erotica menage romance. Bound Hearts #8. Didn't think I was going to like it, but I did, despite awful character names and a somewhat predictable plot. 4 stars.

Creating Chemistry by Marie Harte. SFR erotic menage romance. Creation #3. Really enjoyed it, good series. 4 stars.

Cynful by Dana Marie Bell. PNR. Halle Shifters #2. I wasn't really thrilled with this story, but liked it enough to give it 4 stars.

Desire Unchained by Larissa Ione. PNR. Demonica #2. Ok finished it Feb 1st. It was a good book, a little long. Shade was a bit of an idiot. But I liked it well enough for 4 stars.

Carnal Gift by Pamela Clare. Historical romance. Blakewell #2. Re-released uncut ebook version. This was an ok historical, very predictable. 3 stars.
